Engagement is a Lie
What's Actually Happening to Your People Right Now
You’ve done the surveys. You’ve launched the initiatives. You’ve added the perks, the flexibility, the well-being programs.
And still — something is off.
This keynote makes the case that employee engagement, as we currently measure and pursue it, is a myth. Not because engagement doesn’t matter, but because we’ve been diagnosing a capacity problem as a motivation problem. Drawing on real findings from the HRart Center’s ongoing Burnout Stages research, Samm names what’s living in the space most organizations skip right over — the three stages between fine and burned out that explain everything about why your people feel the way they feel right now.
Audiences leave not with a five-step plan, but with something rarer: a language for what they’ve been living through and the felt experience of being genuinely seen.

YOUR SPEAKER
Meet Samm Smeltzer
Samm Smeltzer has spent more than a decade at the intersection of human resources, leadership development, and energetic health — first as an award-winning HR leader, and now as the founder of The HRart Center.
Her work is built on a foundational belief: that burnout, disengagement, and disconnection aren’t attitude problems. They’re energy problems. And until organizations understand what’s actually happening beneath the surface of their workforce, every engagement strategy they launch will be solving for the wrong thing.
As a Doctor of Medical Qigong, Samm brings the ancient wisdom of Chinese Medicine into conversation with modern HR practice. Honoring a lineage developed over thousands of years while making it immediately practical for the people and organizations she serves.
She is the author of five books, including Unstuck and Renewed, and has spoken for organizations across the country.
